Akureyri Field
The stadium – a new core of human life in Akureyri The proposal builds on the specific characteristics of the site and strengthens the connections between the city center, Eyrir and the surrounding neighborhoods. The goal is to transform the old stadium into a vibrant and accessible urban space where exercise, culture, togetherness and daily life meet. A green and open central area will be the heart of the neighborhood, intended for all age groups for games, outdoor activities, events and community work. The building is of a modest scale, 2–4 floors, and fits well with the local environment. It creates sheltered outdoor spaces, strengthens walking and cycling connections and promotes a safe environment where pedestrians and cyclists have priority. Emphasis is placed on diverse activities on the ground floors, services, workshops and common spaces that create a vibrant streetscape. Existing structures in the area are used and given new roles to create continuity between the past and the future. The lodge will, among other things, be a practice facility for young musicians and a community space, while new cultural and event buildings will strengthen the diverse human life of the area. Special emphasis is placed on children's culture, creativity, exercise and social participation. The proximity to schools, kindergartens, swimming pools, shops and other services makes the area a desirable place to live and stay. Vegetation and local flora will be enjoyed and contribute to a diverse ecosystem and a strong local spirit. The proposal thus creates a new core in the town where residents and visitors can meet, exercise, create and enjoy togetherness in a vibrant and flexible urban space.
