Kirkjusandur
The new neighborhood at Kirkjusandi will be comprehensive and compact with up to 300 apartments plus commercial buildings. Of these, the City of Reykjavík will dispose of 150 apartments, a portion of which will be rental apartments. The aim is to have a diverse population composition in the area. All design in the neighborhood will be meticulous. Apartments will vary in size and are suitable for individuals and larger families alike. Good access will be ensured so that people with reduced mobility can live in and travel in the area. The outdoor value of Kirkjusandur is unequivocal with good access to the coastline and Laugardalur.
The planning area now spans two plots, Kirkjusand 2 and Borgartún 41, but with the amended subdivision plan nine plots will be created in the area. All the design of the area will be in accordance with the emphasis of the Reykjavík Municipal Plan, which has the main objective of improving the urban environment, controlling traffic flow and encouraging changes in travel habits and environmentally friendly transportation. There will be good facilities for cyclists and pedestrians in the neighborhood. Emphasis is placed on bicycle parking being well located above ground, as close as possible to the entrances. Public on-street parking will be chargeable, but residential parking and commercial activities will be mostly in garages, while basements will be under all plots, with shared access and partially shared parking.
